2012-01-18

According to the research conducted in 2011, the Centre for Retail research, based in Nottinghamshire, UK, announces - weaker-than-expected economic recovery drives up shrink by 6,6%. Shrinkage losses have now returned in many cases to the same position they were in two years ago as retailers reported increased shoplifting attempts, organized retail crime, and theft by employees. For the first time ever, apparel is the industry segment with the highest shrink rates globally. Shrink is most problematic in Middle East/Africa and Latin America. Retailers in Europe, however, are suffering the largest total shrink as measured in US dollars - 48, 6 billion. One of the report‘s key findings is that 24% of the most-stolen retail products still aren‘t being protected in some way.

Another article is about one of the biggest grocery retail chains in Italy "Iper, La grande i" and its efforts to combat shrink while retaining a pleasant customer shopping experience by deploying a comprehensive shrink management solution from Checkpoint Systems in many of its 26 hypermarket locations throughout Italy. Self-service checkouts, which are extremely protected, have recently been installed in these supermarkets as well. The company also is preparing for a future move into source tagging in order to ensure that products are „shelf ready" from a loss prevention standpoint once they arrive at the receiving dock at each store. These efforts are actually paying off - Italian retailers, in general, experience somewhat lower shrink rates than do retailers in other countries.

At the end of the issue - an interview with the chief executive of American company "MTI" Chris Remy. MTI created a new solution that is believed to be the only mechanical and electronic loss-prevention system for mobile products. MTI has helped retailers demonstrate their products in innovative, "hands-on" ways for more than three decades. Now MTI partners with Alpha for international distribution.
